William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty Announces Sale of New Fairfield Home of Prominent Magazine Moguls

New Fairfield, Conn. (August 24, 2017) — William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty announced today the sale of the New Fairfield, Conn., home of Art and Amy Cooper, two prominent individuals in New York’s magazine industry. Art served as the editor of GQ Magazine, and helped transform the publication into a showplace for literary journalism. His widow, Amy Levin Cooper, is the former Editor in Chief of Mademoiselle Magazine. The direct waterfront property was sold for $1,295,000 and was represented by Kent agent Karen Casey.

Art Cooper began his storied career in 1964 as a reporter at The Harrisburg Patriot before becoming a correspondent for Time, and then a cultural critic at Newsweek. In 1983 Art Cooper joined GQ, where he left his mark on the magazine before passing away in 2003 at the age of 65.

Serving as the editor for two decades, he turned what was once a small special interest magazine with a focus on the fashion industry into a global general interest publication. During Art Cooper’s time he published a number of famed writers including David Halberstam, J. Anthony Lukas, Garry Wills, William Kennedy and Gore Vidal.

This property at 41 Sail Harbour Drive was a weekend escape for the Coopers on Candlewood Lake. The 3,388 square-foot home resides on 1.76 acres with direct water frontage and an in-ground pool. This modern contemporary home features a 30-foot ceiling in the living room with two-story windows and a floor to ceiling stone fireplace. The light-flooded kitchen boosts a layout designed for entertaining with access to the private rear deck.

The home also features a full unfinished basement with walkout access that easily expands for more potential rooms. There is an over-sized two-car garage and covered front exterior with a well-manicured landscape. Adorning the walls of the house are a collection of photos of Art Cooper with some of the most prominent figures of the late 20th century including former U.S. Presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon, as well as Mohammad Ali, Mick Jagger and other pop culture icons.

“It was an honor to work with Amy Levin Cooper on the sale of this property that meant so much to her family,” Casey said. “Although I did not have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cooper before his passing, from what I have been told they were a charming romantic couple that loved to read, cook and celebrate the life they built together at their lakefront getaway. This home is one of the nicest in the area and will make a wonderful residence for its future owners.”
