The town of Florida, with a population of about 752 residents, is governed by a board of selectmen and town secretary. At the time of the town’s incorporation in 1805, it was mostly agrarian and by the mid-19th century, Florida became a boom town with the construction of the nearly 5-mile long Hoosac Tunnel, which carries the railway under the town. The community, comprising about 24.6 square miles, is bordered on the north by Stamford, Vermont, boasts its own town services which include a public works and fire department, as well as a public library and one school, the Gabriel Abbot memorial School, serving students in grades K-8. High School students in Florida have a choice of attending either Drury High School or the Charles McCann Technical High School in North Adams. Florida’s population is mostly concentrated along the Mohawk Trail, which traverses the community.
