The Berkshire County town of Becket, located in the southern Berkshire Mountains, was incorporated in 1765 and today boasts a population of about 1,779 residents. Encompassing about 47.8 square miles of area, Becket is situated on the county’s eastern border and is located about 17 miles southeast of Pittsfield. Once a thriving community of lumber yards, quarries and dairy farms, Becket is primarily known as a vibrant resort town and artists’ community. In addition to the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the town boasts numerous points of interest including the Becket Arts Center, Becket Athenaeum, The Kushi Institute center of macrobiotics, Canterbury Ski Farm, Camp Watitoh, Camp Greylock and Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA. Students in the community are served by the Central Berkshire Regional School District, of which Becket is one of seven member towns. Recreation is bountiful throughout Becket. The town boasts a portion of the Walnut Hill Wildlife Management Area, and the Appalachian Trail traverses through the town’s western portion.
