The Columbia County town of Canaan, through which the mighty Taconic Mountains rise in its northwest corner, covers an area of 36.9 square miles and is home to about 1,820 residents.

The scenic town of Canaan was settled around 1759, and eventually founded in 1772 as Kings District, although it was renamed Canaan in 1788. Its town line to the east is bordered by Massachusetts, and Interstate 90 passes through Canaan, connecting the Massachusetts Turnpike to the east with the New York State Thruway to the west. The town comprises numerous hamlets and communities, including the hamlet of Canaan, Canaan Center, East Chatham, Edwards Park, Flatbrook, Queechy, Queechy Lake and Red Rock. The town of Canaan includes parts of East Chatham, the rest of which is in the town of Chatham. One of the town’s most notable residents is Albert “Al” Roker Jr., a popular television personality, weather forecaster, author and actor who owns a home in Canaan.
