The Litchfield County town of Morris, originally known as South Farms, was settled in the 1720s as part of Litchfield. The boundaries of South Farms were defined in 1767 when the Ecclesiastical Society was incorporated with 70 families. Although chiefly agricultural, South Farms built saw mills and grist mills on its rivers, had several small businesses, and developed a summer resort business on Bantam Lake. The town was named in honor of James Morris, a Yale graduate, Revolutionary War captain, selectman and member of the General Assembly. Today, Morris is a rural town with a population of about 2,300 people. It is home to the elegant Winvian resort, situated on 113 wooded acres and featuring one-of-a-kind, themed cottages, including a towering treehouse cottage and another that boasts a fully restored Sikorsky helicopter. White Flower Farm also has its retail store/nursery here, which draws gardening enthusiasts from around the region.
