A former practicing attorney, he is a skilled negotiator with over 36 years of experience in litigation and corporate law, the music entertainment and fashion industry, and real estate, all of which he brings to bear in service of his clients’ best interests.
As evidenced by the many testimonials that he has amassed over the years, DeWayne is well liked and praised by his clients. Whether their budget is $10 or $10MM he’ll do the necessary research to find the “one” and will go the full distance to help them overcome any obstacles and get to the closing table—from creative deal structuring to keeping a watchful eye on the transaction details that can mean the difference between failure and success.
DeWayne lives between a classic-six, pre-war apartment in the Washington Heights section of NYC and a ca. 1850 center hall colonial farmhouse in Ghent (upstate NY). The farmhouse sits on 48 acres of fertile soils, on which the famed Hawthorne Valley Farm purveyors have been known to grow hay, wheat, and barley and where grazing cattle dot the fields in spring, summer, and fall. Politically active and a self-described “chronic volunteer,” DeWayne is a former long-serving member of the Hudson Area Library Board of Trustees and of the board of Perfect Ten After School, Inc., both in Hudson, NY. He is currently the co-president of Clarion Concerts in Columbia County, a non-profit dedicated to bringing world-class, live chamber music to the Hudson Valley area of New York state through presenting, commissioning, and fostering new works by Black composers and showcasing Black musicians. He is also an active member of his law school’s black alumni organization.
DeWayne’s roots are in Nassau, Bahamas, and Jamaica, and he is a graduate of both Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and Boston College Law School. He is a frequent traveler, loves engaging with people of diverse cultures—and is an especially avid fan of anything Brasilian. He has a conversational knowledge of Portuguese, Spanish, French and German. The child of West Indian immigrants, he is fluent in Jamaican patois.
DeWayne has been actively practicing real estate since March 2014. He is licensed to practice real estate in New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

We recently purchased a home in upstate New York with the assistance of DeWayne A. Powell, a real estate agent with William Pitt Sotheby’s. Though the process itself was quite a cumbersome experience, we never felt stressed or frustrated; and we attribute much of that to DeWayne. He was an extraordinary teammate from the first onboarding interview to the final walkthrough and closing. As first time homebuyers, he ensured that we not only landed the home of our dreams, but also that we knew all the great features and potential drawbacks of each property. For the initial consultation, DeWayne was thorough in asking us all of our desires and our non-starters. He asked intriguing questions like what is one feature that you loved in your childhood home, or what room do you plan on spending most of your time together while at home. During this call, he also went in detail sharing his knowledge of the area, and setting our expectations as it relates to price, features, and location. We were searching for an older home in the Hudson area, and it was invaluable to learn the idiosyncrasies that we should expect in comparison to the homes we grew up and lived in throughout the years. That gave us a much clearer perspective going into the many walkthroughs we did over the last few months. Something unexpected that we really appreciated was his engagement through the Final Offer platform. We were able to still search for home on our end, while he was able to be deliberate and timely in sharing properties with us that fit our style. Once we began our home viewing journey, we quickly realized the benefit of working with a deeply knowledgeable real estate agent. A few days after our onboarding interview, DeWayne already had viewings arranged. As we made our ways throughout the homes, DeWayne brought many things to our attention that we would’ve missed on our own and the cost of making various improvements. After the viewings, we debriefed; the most valuable discussions we would have during this journey. We discussed what we liked, disliked, and asked questions. He would in turn answer our questions, provide additional insights, and use these conversations to procure more ideal properties. In total, we viewed twelve properties - a mixture of homes we discovered and homes he brought into the fold - one of them having been removed from the market prior to viewing. After three months of searching, we discovered the home we ultimately closed on. This home was originally listed significantly higher, but after a few months on the market the price was cut. After viewing, DeWayne recognized this was THE ONE and helped us formulate an offer strategy. At his guidance, we offered significantly below the new offer price and were overjoyed at the immediate acceptance! Granted, there was work to be done, but nothing we didn’t feel comfortable handling. Something that impressed us greatly was DeWayne’s deep knowledge and understanding of history and details around the properties, down to the construction or remodeling. Quite a historian he is! He was able to outline the multiple projects that would improve both the aesthetics and health of our 140-year old home. In addition to his personal knowledge, he also boasts an extensive network of lawyers, inspectors, and contractors. Prior to closing, he was resourceful in setting us in contact with an honest, high-quality contractor to provide formal quotes on the desired projects. All in all, having DeWayne on our team felt like we had the A-team coming into every scenario. He set expectations and helped us cross the finish line smoothly. We cannot thank him enough. Apart from being extremely communicative and the utmost professional, his wit and kind personality made what could have been a stressful experience, a pleasure. We cannot recommend him enough. If we ever need assistance in the future with real-estate, we absolutely know who we will be contacting. Muchas gracias. DeWayne. You are the best in the game!
